Alabama Geographic Alliance
Summer Geography Institute

June 8-12, 2008
University of North Alabama

The institute is an intensive, four day program that allows teachers of social studies, geography and earth science to become exposed to current research and ideas coupled with grade-appropriate lessons that can be incorporated into a classroom immediately.  Each day will consist of content presentations by geographers and earth scientists in a followed by classroom work, hands-on activities, and ready-made lessons.  At least one  field trip will be a part of the Institute.  Potential topics include hurricanes, Earth Caching, map interpretation, Africa, weather, earthquakes, Middle East, urbanization, air photo interpretation, disaster recovery, and/or China. Teachers Conservation Workshops
Professional Development in Environmental Education

These workshops are designed for Pre K-12 teachers and pre-service educators with the goal of demonstrating the importance of Alabama’s forest resources to the environment and economy. Participants learn about forest ecology, management and products through guest speakers, field trips and hands-on activities. Teachers receive valuable classroom resources including: field guides, posters, Project Learning Tree guides, activity kits and much more.

Hotel and meals are paid for by the generous sponsoring individuals and organizations affiliated with the Alabama Forestry Association. This sponsorship covers your room and board for the workshop; however there is a $35 registration fee, refundable if you cancel at least two weeks prior to the workshop.

E-Learning for Educators
Web-Based Professional Development

eLearning Alabama uses a Web-based model to provide effective professional development that leads to gains in teacher’s content knowledge, improvements in their teaching practices and increases in the achievement of their students.

eLearning Alabama is Alabama’s implementation of the E-Learning for Educators Initiative, a project funded through a federal Ready to Teach grant and multi-state collaboration between nine state education agencies and associated public broadcast stations. eLearning Alabama partners are Alabama Department of Education (ALSDE) and Alabama Public Television (APT).
